Goldman Sachs’ Catherine Winner on Creating Value with ESG

| Feb 22, 2022 |

After graduating from Colgate University in 2002, Catherine Winner, GABELLI ’09, landed a job in Washington D.C. that perfectly tied her economics major with her political science background– that is until she decided to leave Capitol Hill, rent a U-Haul, and head to New York City to pursue a different career.

As part of the Investment Stewardship Series – sponsored by CFA Society New York, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis, and Museum of American Finance – Winner joined Dianne McKeever, JD, chief investment officer and co-founder of Ides Capital Management LP, LAW ‘15, to discuss the path that led her to become managing director of the Global Stewardship Team at Goldman Sachs Asset Management

Winner manages Goldman Sachs’ global proxy voting policy and oversees issues concerning diversity and inclusion and disclosure of ESG data. When collaborating with companies on how they can better improve ESG practices, Winner said it’s important to recognize that such practices are not just for validation, but for the company’s overall growth. “ESG is not a ‘feel-good’ issue,” she said. “We believe sound ESG practices can drive value creation and improve long-term performance. It’s not about values, it’s about creating value.”
