Consultant & Author Joseph Calandro Jr. on the Six Principles of Value Investing

Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse were two of the most influential inventors in American history. Yet, both eventually lost control of the companies they founded for financial reasons.

In his Oct. 20 presentation as part of the Gabelli School Centennial Virtual Speakers’ Series, Joseph Calandro Jr. used these examples to illustrate the importance of capital structure to any organization’s success and explained the advantages of a value investing-inspired management strategy.

“Capital structure is always relevant,” said Calandro Jr., an author, consultant, and fellow of the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. “As a matter of fact, it’s the most relevant thing a corporate manager can do, second to strategy. That’s always been the case, and that always will be the case.”

He pointed to modern-day organizations that have flourished with a value investing strategy—Apple and Geico—and detailed its six key principles, all covered in his book, Creating Strategic Value: Applying Value Investing Principles to Corporate Management.
